50 Cent Launches New Cologne, Album Leaks One Month Ahead Of Schedule

Time and time again, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson proves why he is a cunning and deadly in his role as a rap music business mogul. POWER, a fragrance by 50 cent and partner Lighthouse Beauty. This is the newest business venture for the rap artist entrepreneur.

'Before I Self Destruct' is the newest album upcoming from 50, scheduled to be released on November 17th. Unfortunately for fif, the album has already hit the world wide web. Minus the bonus tracks that will be provided on iTunes, the version that is now available online through multiple torrent sites includes the full track list.

No stranger to album leaks, 50 has tried to keep the master recordings on this album secure. Obviously these extreme efforts have little effect, the inevitable always happens. There is really nothing that notable and popular producers or recording artists can do to avoid this music industry problem.

This leak happens a full month before the actual release. What is 50 going to do, start a beef spark his music marketing campaign for the album ? With sites like ThisIs50.com, and the rapper's MySpace network, his Internet campaign is in the perfect position to boost sales 10 fold. But is that enough ?

Either way, 50 keeps hustling inside and out of the music business, striking deals with mega corporations for huge checks. A true entrepreneur, 50 doesn't look to be dropping the ball any time soon. Although I doubt his album will be perceived as "changing the hip hop landscape" as much as he thinks that will be the impact.

POWER by 50 cent hits stores at MACY'S this fall, album 'Before I Self Destruct' can be found on the web now, and the CD release will probably be available on sites like Amazon and iTunes before it's scheduled date due to the leak.

Chris Brown Embarks On Fan-Appreciation Tour

Chris Breezy is trying to win all his teeny bopper fans back I guess ? The only problem is nobody is buying tickets. There hasn't been many promotions for this tour, are you surprised ? Why would Jive Records shell out a bunch of money on a pretty big risk such as this one right now.

After his highly publicized assault case regarding mega pop star Rihanna, it seems that this R&B singer is having a hard time getting music fans to show up at the shows on his new fan appreciation tour.

This is especially hard to come by, considering the biggest demographic in this recording artists target market are young teen aged girls. I guess we know who these girls are throwing their support behind. Tough crowd.

Public Enemy Announces New Album Release, Joint Fundraiser With SellABand.com

Ground breaking hip hop group Public Enemy is planning to release a new album. This is amazing news, considering the group's first release 'Yo ! Bum rush the show' was released the same year I was born, in 1987. More intriguing though is the fact that Chuck D and Flava Flav are inviting fans to support the creation process by becoming financial investors.

In an interesting joint venture with SellaBand.com, Public Enemy will be accepting donations from fans. The group's goal is to raise approximately $250,000 to fund the making and distribution of their next album release.

For the dedicated fans who invest their money, they will receive limited edition copies. These copies should include a package of features, which still need to be determined. Amazingly, in only two short weeks the site has raised over $55,000 in funds for Public Enemy's new record.

All in all SellABand has raised a staggering 2.5 million dollars for bands and recording artists around the world. Seems that people are open to the idea of investing in the future success of new artists. Would you use this model as a method to generate funding for your album ?

Copyrights -- Protecting Your Music Business Assets

As an independent rap artist or hip hop producer, the tracks you record are considered valuable assets in your music catalog. It goes without saying that you should always protect your assets. This article is designed to help you better understand how copyrights work and how important they are to your rap music business. Before you can protect your beats and/or songs, you need to understand exactly what a copyright is, how and when it applies to you as an artist or producer.

What Is A Copyright ?

When a creative work such as lyrics, a song, stories or a screen play are expressed in a tangible form such as being written down or recorded, they are pieces of intellectual property owned by their creator. The creator is also now protected by international copyright law. Copyright law grants copyright holders specific rights pertaining to their work. These rights include all of the following:

1. The exclusive right to reproduce the work.

2. Make derivatives (remakes/remix) of the work.

3. Distribute copies of the work.

4. Publicly perform/display the work.

5. Publicly perform audio recordings of the work through digital transmissions.

When does copyright protection begin ?

Copyright protection begins the moment a new original work is created. Once the work is in a tangible form such as written down (a book, music notation, screenplay, etc.) copyright protection is applied. When you write down a lyric, you are the sole copyright owner of that lyric. Same goes for a master recording, when you are recording in the studio, the moment your live take is recorded you are the copyright owner of the recording (assuming you also produced the beat -- other wise the producer also shares an interest in the copyright of the track).

How Long Does Copyright Protection Last ?

The exclusive rights to a work is held by the creator/copyright owner for a limited amount of time. Copyrights protect a new work for seventy (70) years after the death of the creator, or for ninety-five (95) years if the copyright is held by a corporation. Once a copyright expires, the work enters into the public domain, meaning it can be used by anyone for whatever reason be it creative, commercial or otherwise.

The copyright holders can assign their rights to another person, company or third-party corporate entity, if they choose. Copyright holders can also issue licenses that allows other people or entities to use their works temporarily, under specified terms.

A "Compulsory" license requires copyright holders to issue such a license under certain circumstances, regardless if they volunteer to do so or not. These circumstances include the re-broadcast of TV programs by cable companies, the use of copyrighted works in public broadcast systems, digital radio and web/podcasts as well as the "mechanical license" to manufacture and distribute the recordings.

Which Forms Should Be Filed ?

The Form SR (sound recordings) is what you will need to file in order to copyright your beats and or songs. There is a fee charged for every time you copyright a new work. If you file the form electronically (online) you will be charged $35 per submission. There are more advantages to submitting copyright form online. The charge is $45 if you choose to send in the copyright form by mail. It is more cost effective and efficient for you to copyright a whole cd (compilation such as a mixtape or ep) of works (15-20 songs) and pay the fee once, instead of paying $35 per each time you copyright one song.

For more information please visit: http://www.copyright.gov/register/

Why Do Producers/Artists Need Copyrights ?

As a hip hop producer or rap artist, failing to protect your self by copyrighting your beats and/or songs is a costly mistake you CANNOT afford to make. Yes, the price to file the forms sucks, but those fee's are more then worth the price of security in a big time deal or legal battle. Remember, your songs are valuable assets that need to be copyrighted, cataloged and protected.

Controlling your copyrights gives you leverage when making a music business deal. It also completely covers your own ass if a legal dispute happens to arise. Being prepared is the best way to avoid problems and concentrate more on profiting from your intellectual property.

BET Hip Hop Awards Aims To Be Highlight Of October

Hip hop events are unlike any other, but one in particular is always regarded highly above most. The BET Hip Hop Awards show is where most hip hop, R&B and rap recording artists would love to receive recognition from their peers and the industry.

Most of the hip hop discussion this month will no doubt be about the awards show nominee's, performers and celebrity host plus guest list. This event takes place on Tuesday October 27t, being held in Atlanta Georgia. This year's ceremony will be led by the hilarious and talented Mike Epps will will surely kill it.

The page on BET.com features a count down as we draw closer to the show. Who are some of your favorite nominee's and/or artists performing ? Here are some of my predictions or three of the categories that interest me most.

I'm thinking that Rookie of the Year award is going to be no contest. Drake's year in the game has made him a household name in the popular rap music genre, making a large commercial impact. The other rap artists in this list made significant gains as well, I believe he will win. Kid Cudi cannot be counted out, I'm thinking he will be the runner up if not the actually award winner. Wale, B.O.B. and Dorrough get honourable mentions.

The list of nominee's for MVP of the Year '09 is all heavy hitters (save Drake, who has had a breakthrough year), but who's going to take it ? Jay-Z, T.I., Kanye West, and Lil Wayne all had a great year, but I'm going to put my chips on Wayne for this one, just got that feeling.

As for a category close to my heart (lol) the hip Hop Blog of the year. This one is a tough call, seeing as all of the sites/bogs listed are extremely credible and provide readers with quality posts. WorldStarHipHop.com, SOHH.com, ThisIs50.com, and NahRight.com are visited by this blog author frequently, but I have to say my favorite above all is AllHipHop.com. I think AllHipHop is taking this award home this year.

Post up some of your predictions.

T-Pain's A Hit, AutoTune iPhone App Achieving Success In Digital Sales

The "I Am T-Pain" application for the Apple iPhone is starting to pick up some serious steam. Quickly after it's release, the app has reached a plateau of over 300,000 digital downloads. At $2.99 USD a download, that adds up to be roughly $897,000 earned in sales. Not too shabby.

T-Pain is currently hosting a contest for the funniest remakes of his songs. Users are encouraged to send their video remix through YouTube. The rapper is offering cash prizes for the winners as incentives. One of the songs many people have chose to remix is the funny "I'm On A Boat" track which was written by The Lonely Island (a group of actor/comedy writers from Saturday Night Live) featuring T Pain.

All in all, over 1 million user generated recordings have been made using this application. Pretty impressive numbers for only being on the market about one month.
Check out this cool video of other hip hop artists using the I Am T-Pain application for the Apple iPhone.

Apple Settles Out of Court With Music Publisher Eight Mile Style

Although details have remained concealed, a settlement has been reached between Apple and Eight Mile Style LLC, after a brief outing with the courts. As per my previous post on this subject, I thought I would present this short follow up.

Eight Mile Style is the music publishing company which represents the interests in a music catalog containing a number of tracks created by superstar rap artist Eminem. Corporate giant Apple, thought they had secured a deal with Aftermath Entertainment, to use certain Eminem recordings for commercials promoting their iPod products, as well as the right to sell the tracks through their iTunes program.

Unfortunately, this whole debacle ensued due to the fact that Aftermath Entertainment did not in fact an owning interest in the tracks named specifically. Those rights are held by Eight Mile Style, LLC, who went on to file suit against Apple.

A new deal is apparently to be re-structured, so what's the big deal ? Well aside from a few million dollars during a recession, nothing. It's some Shady shit. Welcome to the rap game.

Relocation of Bad Boy Entertainment, Diddy Takes Label To Interscope Records

Music business mogul and pop cultural icon Diddy has recently signed a deal with Interscope records. This venture will see Bad Boy Entertainment's future releases being distributed through Interscope/Geffen/A&M. The first release to start this new deal will be Diddy's upcoming "Last Train To Paris".

After serving a five year term with Warner Music Group's Atlantic label, the hip hop producer has decided to leave the label for a joint venture with Interscope in search of greener pastures. Combs stated he was not abandoning his Bad Boy artists at Warner Music, but was revamping the Bad Boy imprint to cater towards developing the future stars of the rap music business.
